Moving Advice: Pets

Taking care of the family!
Pets are just as important, and can’t be forgotten when moving house! Here’s a few points to make sure that your goldfish moves house as comfortably as possible! Your pet will need time to adjust to the new surroundings. When you get to the house, check the garden fence for holes whereby the animal may be able to escape and block them up. You don’t want to loose your pooch as soon as you move in!

Feeding
Please don’t feed your pet for at least a few hours before the move.

Safety
Place the pet in a quiet room to avoid disruption and harm when the furniture is being loaded. Lock the doors and let everyone know that the pet is in the room.

Transportation
Buy a high quality pet carrier, which will make the animal as comfortable as possible. Before the move, familiarize the pet with the cage so they are used to traveling in a carrier.

Essentials
Don’t forget essentials such as their food, water, and leads. Remember to stop regularly and let the animal have a breather and go to the toilet, especially in hot weather, whereby small animals in particular can become dehydrated.

Cars
Never leave your pet alone in a car for long periods of time, with no air circulating the vehicle. Dogs especially can die in this way if it’s a hot day.

Birds
Cover bird and small animal cages with a cloth to calm the animal. Birds especially are sensitive to sudden temperature changes.

Fish
Fish are very difficult to move. Remember oxygen in water isn’t indefinite, and fish can also suffocate. Consult a pet shop if you are transporting tropical fish as special arrangements will need to be made.

Security
Once you’ve moved house, remember to change the tag implant (if they have one) to correspond with their new address. Also remember to change their collar tag.
